Students in 6th grade on-level math start off the year extending their previous skills of multiplying and dividing rational numbers and being introduced to integers. They are also introduced to the building blocks of algebra. Students will use a variety of platforms to show mastery of existing and new knowledge. Both individual and group work are used frequently to reinforce new skills. Students take notes digitally. Chromebooks are used often to engage learners with game-like activities.
PreAP mathematics is a fast-paced class. The course will cover 6th and about half of the 7th grade math curriculum on one year. Some mathematics concepts such as solving equations and inequalities will be taught at the 7th grade level.
Chromebooks are used to work on interactive activities regularly. Students will be expected to use a notebook to take notes and to work out math problems on paper. Students will be expected to justify work by writing about mathematics.
To be successful in PreAP math, students need to consistently work out class practices, come to class prepared, and to ask questions.
Accelerated mathematics is a fast-paced class. The course will cover 6th, 7th, and 8th grade mathematics concepts in one school year. Successful completion of the class will prepare students to take Algebra 1 during the 7th grade. Because the class is extremely fast-paced, one to two days are spent on a given concept only. Students will work with graphing calculators when working on 8th grade level concepts. Unit tests are given at the end of each unit. Quizzes are more frequent than any other 6th grade mathematics course.
