The Texas Bluebonnet Award is a reading program started in 1979 to encourage students in Texas grades 3-6 to read more. Each year, students choose the winning book by voting after they have read at least 5 books from the list.
Started as a project by the Children's Round Table of Texas, the Texas 2x2 Reading List is made of 20 titles selected by committee members each year to encourage children age 2 through second grade to read.
This is a list of graphic novels selected each year by Texas librarians for grades K-5 to encourage students to explore graphic novels.
The Newberry Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
A committee of the Association for Library Service to Children identifies these "notable" book, which include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and pictures for ages birth through 14.
The Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.
The Coretta Scott King Award is given to African American authors and illustrators for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions; the winning titles promote understanding of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream.
The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
