Physical and Chemical Properties

I can differentiate between physical and chemical changes and properties and identify extensive properties (such as mass and volume) and intensive properties (such as density and melting point).

2.2 Classification of Matter

Matter can be classified using its state, purity, or the way it changes. States of matter include solids, liquids, and gases. Purity of matter can be described as either a pure substance or a mixture. Pure substances can be further classified as compounds that contain a fixed number of elements or as elements that cannot be decomposed by chemical or physical methods. Mixtures can be further classified as homogeneous (constant throughout) or heterogeneous (variable throughout). The changes that take place in matter can be either physical with no change in composition or chemical in which a new substance is formed.
