5th Grade Newsletter 

IMPORTANT!

Dear 5th Grade Parents,

We want to reach out about some behavior and academic concerns we are currently seeing in 5th grade. We have noticed an increase in students refusing or avoiding classwork, not completing homework or assignments, refusing to participate, and not consistently showing respect toward teachers and peers.

We are also addressing concerns with students not keeping their hands to themselves or making unkind comments. Physical aggression and unsafe behavior are not tolerated and may result in a referral or other school consequence.

Please remember that our 5th grade events, activities, and incentives are privileges that students earn through positive behavior, effort, responsibility, and academic performance. Students with excessive missing work or behavior concerns may not be able to participate in certain activities. When students are absent, they are also responsible for making up missed work, and excessive missing work may need to be completed during times normally used for special activities.

Parents, we need your help! Please talk with your child about the importance of coming to school ready to learn, completing their work, making an effort, being respectful, and keeping their hands to themselves.

We have an exciting year planned for our students, and we want every 5th grader to have a successful and memorable year. Thank you for partnering with us and helping us make that happen! 💙🧡

** Friday folders will go home every Friday.  Please take some time to discuss the folder, work and conduct grades with your student.**

Academic Information 

ELA- This week readers will be continuing our informational unit.  We will be focusing on main idea, text structure/organization, summary, author's purpose, synthesizing,  and inference. Writers will be  responding to pieces of text in the form of an SCR (Short  Constructed Response). Students should be reading daily at home.  We went to the library on Friday, and will be visiting the library every week.   

Science- Scientists will begin to demonstrate and explain that some mixtures maintain the physical properties of their substances.  TEKS 5.6.B

Math- Mathematicians will be leaning the extension of the decimal place value system to the thousandths and its fraction correlation through expanded notation. Students also will compare and order decimals using symbols.

Lunch Visitors 

Lunch visitors for 5th graders are allowed on Fridays.  Lunch visitors MUST show ID at the office.  For the safety and comfort of all students, parents are ONLY allowed to eat with their own child and not any other students.  Student guests are not permitted.  

Snack Time

• Students are allowed to bring a small-individual sized snack to eat.  Hot chips, Takis, candy, etc are not allowed.  Please refrain from sending sticky snacks and snacks requiring spoons or forks, as we want to keep our work areas, desks, and classrooms tidy.  Some examples of snacks could be: crackers, granola bars, carrots, grapes, etc.  No peanut or nut products, due to allergies.
