Bhunnisa Wisassinthu is an Assistant Professor at Khon Kaen University and a PhD candidate in Communication Studies at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. Her academic path began with research in semiotics, investigating meaning-making processes in news features and advertising, and examining how media constructs meanings and how audiences interpret them. This early work established a foundation that later expanded into journalism and media studies, where she employs content analysis and data-driven approaches to explore media systems, journalistic role, and media practices.

I am an Assistant Professor at Khon Kaen University and a PhD candidate in Communication Studies at the School of Journalism and Information Communication, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
My academic philosophy is shaped by an interdisciplinary background—rooted in mass communication and expanded into teaching and research across communication studies. My expertise lies in journalism and media studies, with a particular focus on advertising and news analysis. Building on earlier research in semiotics and advertising, I bring a distinctive interdisciplinary perspective that connects meaning-making processes with data-driven analyses of journalism and media practices. In other words, my research philosophy is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach that bridges semiotics, communication theory, and data-driven methods. This perspective not only enables me to conduct rigorous analyses of media practices but also allows me to generate frameworks that address pressing issues.
Beyond research and teaching, I believe knowledge carries responsibilities: to advance education, to foster analytical thinking, to promote mutual understanding, and to contribute to social well-being by strengthening social trust. Each milestone in my journey—whether in classrooms, research projects, or community engagement—has been not only an academic achievement but also a step toward cultivating a more informed and harmonious society.
With extensive experience in both undergraduate and graduate programs, I specialize in Communication Studies and Journalism studies, and how to apply these areas with data-driven strategies and digital information. My teaching philosophy emphasizes the application of interdisciplinary knowledge, combining theoretical foundations, practical skills, and research methodologies to prepare students for complex challenges in media, communication, and digital information. I have taught courses both independently and as part of module sequences within larger programs, fostering interdisciplinary learning, active student engagement, and program-level development, while promoting the development of competencies applicable across diverse professional and research contexts.

My academic career has been devoted to the fields of communication studies and information science, reflecting over two decades of teaching and research experience. Within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, I have carried extensive teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and graduate levels—ranging from core courses in information science to a wide variety of minor courses across the humanities and social sciences. This sustained and often demanding workload has enriched my expertise in interdisciplinary pedagogy and strengthened my ability to integrate diverse perspectives into the classroom. My academic journey has not been entirely straightforward; it has been shaped by resilience, persistence, and an enduring commitment to advancing both teaching and research.
In addition, I have developed strong expertise in integrating communication skills and digital technologies into teaching. Between 2015 and 2017, I received faculty grants to deliver courses in English and to pioneer the early adoption of instructional innovations. These experiences have enabled me to transform demanding teaching responsibilities into scholarly contributions through innovative teaching practices, curriculum development, and the creation of instructional materials.
In other words, beyond classroom teaching, I have developed a range of instructional materials—including study guides, e-learning modules, and digital learning media—for both core and minor courses. These materials enhance student learning and exemplify pedagogical innovation, qualifying as scholarly outputs under the academic works for teaching and learning development.

Collaboration with Thai Health Promotion Foundation (สสส.)
During my Master’s study, I had the opportunity to join as a project team member supporting media development for the “สุขภาพดีวิถีไทย” campaign. This involvement extended to initiatives promoting alternative health and well-being, allowing me to gain practical experience in media production, teamwork, and health promotion communication.
Project Engagement with the Ministry of Commerce, Thailand
During my Master’s study, I participated as part of a media production team on projects concerning copyright and patent rights, contributing to efforts that bridged communication between policy and public understanding.
Research Grant
Center for Alcohol Studies (CAS), Thailand funded research on alcohol advertising and beverage marketing communication, examining semiotics in ads and tackling policy implications.
Khon Kaen University (KKU) Research Fund led a research project on media campaigns for youth health promotion, focusing on communication strategies for behavioral change.
