The Kiwanis club stands for "we build" or "we share our talents," derived from a Native American (Algonquian language family) expression, and serves as a global service organization dedicated to improving communities and the lives of children through service and building friendships. The name emphasizes the club's mission to be a positive force and make lasting differences in communities worldwide.
Kiwanis was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, as a business networking club called the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers. It became an international organization in 1916 with the addition of a Canadian club and changed its name to Kiwanis, derived from an Algonquian phrase. After shifting its focus to community service in 1919, and specifically to serving children, the organization has expanded globally and officially allowed women to join in 1987.
