Pete T. Zychal 

Pete T. Zychal was born on January 31, 1921 to Polish immigrants. He grew up in Export, Pennsylvania. On October 31, 1939, he enlisted into the United States Army, over two years before the United States became involved in World War II. He received training at Langley Field in Virginia. During the war, he served in the U.S.A.A.F. (United States Army Air Forces) in Europe. He was stationed in North Africa and in London. He took part in the Air Offensive in Europe, working with Boeing-made bombers. He was an Airplane Mechanic-Gunner (748) and a Airplane Maintenance Chief (750). With these titles, he was qualified to fire aerial machine guns on multi-engined bombers, assist the pilot by keeping a constant check on the plane’s mechanical functioning, supervise the inspection, maintenance, and repair of aircraft equipment, and other tasks involving the usage and maintenance of aircraft. The rank he achieved by the end of the war was Technical Sergeant and his medals earned include the Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal, a Carbine Qualification Clasp, and an Aircrew Badge. He was discharged from the Army Air Forces on October 7, 1945 one month after the war ended. After the war, he married and moved to Delmont and finally Mamont where he lived the rest of his life. His post-war employment included a job at Westinghouse Electric and later a job with Jeannette Window Glass. He passed away on June 6, 2008 at the age of 87.
