Sylvester Begolly

Sylvester Begolly was born on December 14, 1914 in Natrona, Pennsylvania. His parents were John and Rose (Matthews) Begolly. On December 27th, 1914, he was baptized at St. Ladislaus Church. His family moved to Vandergrift when he was a young child, and he attended St. Gertrude Grade School. Sylvester graduated from Vandergrift High School in 1933. He married Mary Louise Makowski at St. Gertrude Church on May 16, 1950; they had a son named Michael. He served on the church council at St. Gertrude Parish in the 1960s. Before he was drafted into the United States army in 1942 at age 27, he worked for United Engineering and Foundry Company. 

Sylvester served in the 1st Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, and France; was a sergeant. He was wounded three times and awarded the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Bronze Star. After World War II, he worked at Fondrik’s Hardware in Leechburg. His wife, Mary Lou, died in 1985. Sylvester died on April 13, 2005 at St. Anne Home in Greensburg at the age of 90. He was buried at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Vandergrift.
