Arthur Spang

Arthur Spang Sr., 79, of Vandergrift, died peacefully, with his wife by his side, Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at his home, after long illness. He was born in Vandergrift and is the son of Joseph A. Spang and Margorie E. Spang, and stepmother, Grace Spang. Art was a dedicated employee of the Vandergrift Telephone Company for 40 years, where he retired as a pioneer for GTE. He was also a lifelong member of the NRA, PNA bowling league, Slovak Club, American Legion, Dents Run Sportsman Club and CB Club. He was of Seneca Indian descent. Art is a veteran of the Army where he served in the Korean War.  Art enjoyed hunting, fishing, BBQ's, camping and spending quality time with family playing cards. He loved Farmville, oil painting and puzzles. He coached the Mets for the Vandergrift little league for a number of years. Art enjoyed spending time with his six children. He was instrumental in teaching his children to live and love life. Art leaves his wife of 54 years, Rose Marie (Pirhella) Spang; his children, Arthur Spang Jr., of North Carolina, Frank (Mersa) Spang, of Newport, N.C., John Spang, of Vandergrift, Patricia Spang, of Vandergrift, Nancy (Carlos) Howard, of North Carolina, and Tracy (Rob) Saville, of East Vandergrift; and a brother, William (Dale) Spang, of Vandergrift. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Boyd (Delnora) Spang; a sister, Ethel Irene (Sam) Henderson; and two nephews, Christopher Spang and Jimmy Henderson. Also dearly missing him are his 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
