Joseph G. DiGiacomo

Joseph G. DiGiacomo was born on November 17, 1929 in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. Joseph grew up alongside his brother, Norbert, before graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1953. Joe also completed U.S. Naval Submarine School in 1955 and Inertial Navigation and Computer Engineering at U.S. Navy Guided Missiles School in 1962. He taught electricity and electronics at the Academy from 1959-61. A retired Navy Captain, Joseph DiGiacomo served 23 years in the Navy before retiring. He completed 13 years of sea duty on eight different submarines and was the commanding officer on three Attack Class Subs. One of those submarines is now currently on display in Baltimore Harbor, Maryland. Joseph soon went on to serve as Deputy Chief, Tactics Branch, of the Joint Strategic Targeting Planning Staff. He ended his career as a Nuclear Warfare Concepts Coordinator at the Office of Chief Naval Operations. Joe received many awards for his time and service such as the Navy Occupational Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Expert Rifleman Badge, and Joint Service Commendation Medal. After serving during the Korean War and retiring, Joseph went on to work for SAIC as a deputy for cruise missiles and then managed business development for SAI Technology. Joe followed his passion for fine wines and cigars after the war. DiGiacomo also loved to sing and owned two Bulldogs. Joseph and his wife experienced heartbreak in 1986 at the death of their beloved son, Jay, from colon cancer. His wife, Regina, passed away in October of 2002 after 47 years of marriage. The two of them lived in Washington D.C. for about 30 years. Joseph G. DiGiacomo passed away on May 16, 2011 in Rockford Illinois. He was currently living in Alexandria, Virginia at the time and was buried there as well. Joseph was 81 years old at the time of his passing.
