Robert D. Johnston

Robert, a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Korean War, was born on January 18, 1932. He grew up in Vandergrift and went to Kiski Area High School. After he graduated from high school, he went on to study at Allegheny College where he got his BA in history. He was also a baseball star in high school and college. Robert came back to the Kiski Area School District in 1959 to teach and coach baseball. In 1969 he became headmaster of Durham Academy. The school prospered and became on of the best high schools in the country. He was headmaster of the University School of Milwaukee, Charlotte Country Day School, and Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia. After Robert retired in 1996, he was recognized as one of the most well respected school leaders in the country. Robert passed away on January 26, 2015.
