John S. Sterlitz

John Sterlitz was born on September 14, 1927, in East Vandergrift. He was the son of Chester and Pauline Sterlitz. He attended Vandergrift High School and graduated in 1944. Sterlitz served for 42 years. Before he entered the Korean War, he served with the Merchant Marines during World War II. In the Korean War, he served as a corporal in the army. As a corporal, he occupied the first rank of the levels of Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO's). He was responsible for the training, performance, appearance, and well being of soldiers. As a corporal, he was also in charge of a team of soldiers, ranging from two to five personnel. Sterlitz was expected to take care of his soldiers outside of work, ensuring their personal lives were in order. After the Korean War, Sterlitz was a bundler in finishing at the West Leechburg Works of Allegheny Ludium Steel Corp. He was also a nurse's aid at Citizen's General Hospital in New Kensington for 18 years. He retired in 1992. Sterlitz is survived by five sons, fifteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. In his free time he enjoyed bowling and being with his children. John died on July 14, 2010 at the Allegheny General Hospital.
