Born November 14, 1887, John was a white, short, and slender man with brown hair and gray eyes. Campbell was a natural born U.S citizen, and lived with his family. He was the son of Michael Truby Campbell and Clara Melinda McMillen Campbell. He also had a younger brother, Roy Campbell. At the age of 29, John enlisted into the U.S Army. When he enlisted he lived in Vandergrift, Pa. Before being drafted, he was a railroad watchmen, employed by Pennsylvania R.R. He was single and had no children. Campbell had no previous experience in the military beforehand. He was in the 110th Infantry Regiment. For 2 years he served and fought in the war. Unfortunately, He was killed during World War 1 on July 28, 1918. The young soldier was only 31 when he died, and was buried overseas. Later he was disinterred and reburied in Vandergrift on July 18, 1921.
