George W. Shaffer

Major George W. Shaffer was born in 1922 in Oklahoma, later moving to the Vandergrift area before becoming a serviceman in World War 2 on February 17, 1943 when he would have been 20 years old at the time of deployment. Major Shaffer was part of the US Army Air Forces, regiment being the 398th Bomber Squadron, 504th Bomber Group- very heavy. Due to his achievements within his service in the military, he was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and even the Purple Heart. After being a part of the US military from 1943 to 1945, he was assigned to a mission to Kobe Urban Area with a crew of ten men. This was the mission where Major George W. Shaffer died along with all other crewmen. His death date was assumed to be March 18, 1945 and is part of the “Missing in Action or Buried at Sea” category. He is recognized at the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii as well as many other memorials such as the one found in Vandergrift, PA. Major Shaffer is one of over 103,014 casualties found amongst World War 1, World War 2, and the Korean War.
