George Karnes was a World War 1 veteran during his lifetime. He was born in Bell Township of Allegheny County in 1890. He was a Private of the United States National Guard. Karnes was known as “everyone’s granddad” for his sympathy for others and being generous by giving up his time to help others in need. For the actions he has done to help others would benefit him in the draft registration for World War I. Karnes was 27 years old when the drafts have started for World War I. He was part of the 28th Infantry Division. He fought at the Battle of Cantigny, in the village of Cantigny in France, to support the 1st Infantry Division and the French army against the Germans. Once the Great War was resolved, Mr. Karnes was rewarded with Croix de Guerre Medal for being allies with the French. He also was rewarded with World War I Victory Medal for the victory of World War I. Mr. Karnes died in Avonmore of Westmoreland County in 1966 from peritonitis after swallowing a toothpick in a stuffed cabbage. He is remembered as the person who helped everybody, whether it was a ride to the doctor's office or directing traffic during important town events. He even flirted with the ladies, speaking French to them which he learned during combat. The citizens of Bell Township remembered George Karnes as heroic, sympathetic, and caring who  that never left anyone behind no matter what the case may be.
