Edward P. Tumas

Edward Paul Tumas

(December 5, 1922 - December 11, 1944)

Edward Tumas was born on December 5, 1922 to John Tumas and Catherine Yasevicz. His parents immigrated to the United States and settled in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. When he graduated from high school in 1941, he worked as a clerk for U.S. Steel before he entered the military on January 20, 1943. He was assigned to Company B of the 629th Tank Destroyer Battalion. In June he was sent to train at the Desert Training Center, and later moved to Fort Hood, Texas. He was sent to Normandy on January 1, 1944. There, they joined the 30th Infantry Division and supported actions around Falaise. While in Grasshau and Strauss, Germany, Sgt. Tumas volunteered to to stay overnight in a building with the wounded to provide aid. The next morning, December 11, 1944 he was killed by a mortar shell that went through the roof of the building. Eddie was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for Gallantry and disregard for his own safety. He was only 22 years old when he died, and buried at the US Military Cemetery Margraten, Holland.
