Boyd M. Gumbert

Boyd M. Gumbert, son of William A Gumbert and Lillie I Gumbert, was born in the Vandergrift area in 1924 and grew up on Wallace Avenue in New Kensington. Boyd had three brothers; Roy R, Lynn, and David. He had four years of high school education before joining the air force at age 18, being unmarried with no children. Gumbert was a white male, five foot seven inches tall, and weighed 141 pounds. He enlisted in the army on October 21, 1942 and was a staff sergeant in World War II. He specialized in mechanical treatment to metals. Gumbert was a right gunner in the air force, and on his final run his plane was hit with Flak causing it to explode. Gumbert survived the initial explosion and subsequent crash, however, his injuries were very severe and he was found near the wreckage where he had lost his life on January 11, 1945 at age 21.  He is buried in Milton Cemetery, Armstrong County.
