Andrew B. Chelko

Andrew was born in East Vandergrift on November 15, 1925. Chelko is the son of Michael and Catherine Chelko. He graduated from Vandergrift high school in 1944. When Andrew was 16 years old, he joined the navy. The naval ship he was assigned to was attacked in Pearl Harbor. He worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. for 36 years, and was also a truck driver before retiring. Chelko was a member of the Roman Catholic church, a member of the Kiski Valley Coalition to Save Our Children, and a member of the Slovak Club. Andrew lived to be 89 years old. He died on July 18, 2015. He was the last survivor of World War II in Armstrong County. He was buried at the Evergreen cemetery in Gilpin Township.
