Raymond G. Hunter

Raymond G. Hunter was born on June 21st, 1941 and grew up in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. In June of 1959, just at the age of 18, Mr. Hunter was enlisted in the Navy for the Vietnam War. The unit he participated in consisted of being a Flight Engineer, Aviation Administration, and a Mechanic. During the war Mr. Hunter was ranked E6 which means he was a Staff Sergeant. What this means is that he was just above Sergeant and below Sergeant First Class, and is a non-commissioned officer. Staff Sergeants are generally placed in charge of squads, but can also act as platoon sergeants in the absence of a Sergeant First Class. In 1979, he retired from active duty, he served for 20 years. Some awards he acquired over his military career were Good Conduct Medals, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. Mr. Hunter died at the age of 71 on August 25th, 2012 in Apollo, Pennsylvania and is currently buried at Greenwood Memorial Park.
