William R. Mason


William R. Mason is remembered for his service in the Army during both World War II and Korea. Mr. Mason was born on June 26, 1923 in the Kinlock section of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania.  He is the son of the late William Edward and Ellen ‘Nellie’ Mason. Mr. Mason was raised with four sisters: Mary Mason Grieshaber, Ruth Mason Cruze, Lorraine Mason Finney, and Nellie Jean Mason. 

Between the years 1941 and 1945, Mr. Mason served in World War II in the finance corps.  The finance corp was responsible for financing the construction and operation of war plants and also making loans to foreign governments during the war. In the years of 1952 and 1953, Mason served in the Korean War in the Engineering Corps constructing roads and bridges to facilitate the United Nations efforts.  Along with building, the corp also worked to destroy vital supplies and facilities the enemy controlled

After his time of service in World War II, Mr. Mason married Shirley Anderson in 1947.  Their first home was in Parnassus, but he eventually bought property in Allegheny Township and built his own home.  He lived there for over 60 years and raised four children; Linda Mason Merle, Robert Mason, John Mason, and Laura Mason Lockard. All four of their children were graduates of Kiski Area.  Over the next 40 years Mr. Mason worked for ALCOA as a machinist in the Research Department. Many of the products that he helped develop are still in use today in the US Space Program. Mr. Mason passed away at the age of 88 on September 17th of 2011.
