William E. Uhing

William E. Uhing of Kepple Hill section of Parks Township, was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Vandergrift, to the late William B. and Violet Shaeffer Uhing. Mr. Uhing proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Army during World War II. Mr. Uhing fought the European Theater, Rhineland Ardennes, Battle of the Bulge and Northern France. His declarations and citations include the Bronze Star, Croix de Guerre, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart. Following his service to his country, Mr. Uhing began employment at Allegheny Ludlum Corporation in Brackenridge. He worked as a locomotive engineer operator and retired in 1988 after 40 years of employment. Mr. Uhing enjoyed hunting and fishing at the family camp that he and his family established. Mr. Uhing was a member of Parks Township Fire Department, Slovak Club and Fireman's Club in Parks Township. He was also a member and served as the past commander of the VFW, American Legion and DAV, also in Parks Township. For many decades, Mr. Uhing was a distinguished speaker at the Memorial Day Celebrations in Vandergrift. Mr. Uhing is survived by his son, Richard (Mary Jane) Uhing, of Nanticoke, and Thomas (Jo-Ann) Uhing, of Sarver; grandchildren, Brian (Kelly) Uhing, of Kepple Hill, Jessica (Heath) Uhing-Luedde, of Boston, and Joseph T. (Kristin Babjak fiance), Uhing, of Sarver; and five great-grandchildren, Allie, Gracie and William Uhing, of Kepple Hill, and Evan and John Luedde, of Boston. He is also survived by his sisters, Valjean Jury, of Apollo, and Lois Geiger, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. In addition to his parents, Mr. Uhing was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Eileen Duffy Uhing in 2008; his son, David Uhing in 2007; and a granddaughter. He is also preceded in death by his sisters, Gertrude Petrosky, Eleanor Young; and brother, Paul Uhing.
