William “Dale” Hunter

William “Dale” Hunter was born on April 30, 1919 in Avonmore, Pennsylvania. His father, Roy Hunter, and mother, Jennie Belle Cramer, had 12 other children as well. After graduating from Avonmore High School in 1937, Hunter enlisted into the United States Navy on September 15, 1937 in Buffalo, New York. He traveled the around the world about 3 times and was stationed in multiple locations including: Connecticut, Maine, Panama, Antarctica, Europe, and South America. While in the navy, he was on 3 different ships; Sea Robin, Plunger, and Proteus.  Hunter went through many ranks starting at Frogman.  He also progressed to Torpedo Man, Instructor, Chief of the Boat, and Master Chief.  Mr. Hunter retired from service on October 8, 1947 from the USS Sea Robin SS 407 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  He received many achievements throughout his time in the navy, including the Silver and Bronze Star along with honorable commendations.  After he retired from the navy, Hunter resided in Apollo and later moved to Florida with his wife Marge Hunter.  The couple had 5 children; Beverly Gourley, Norma Michaelson, Diane Spears, Mark Farineau, and Christy Barnhart, along with 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  William Hunter died on February 25, 2007 in Vero Beach, Indian River, Florida.
