Lance W. Davis

Lance Woodrow Davis was born on August 17th, 1918.  His mother was Dorothy J. Davis and his father was Harry A. Davis.  Dorothy Davis’s maiden name was Dunmire, and Harry Davis was ten years older than her.  Lance Davis’s mother and father were both born in Pennsylvania.  Lance Davis grew up as an only child at 421 Emerson Street in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania.  He graduated from Vandergrift High School in 1936.  

He registered for the draft in 1940 at the age of 22.  According to his draft registration card, he was a white male who was 5’ 11” tall, weighed 180 pounds, and had blue eyes and brown hair.  He was also able to read, write, and speak English.  His next of kin was Arthur Pewton.  

The next year, Davis married Juanita Mansfield.  Their marriage took place on June 16th, 1941 in Washington, District of Columbia.  Prior to his entry into the active service, Lance Davis lived at 1020 North Frederick Street in Arlington, Virginia.  

On October 20th, 1942, he entered the active service in Washington, District of Columbia; he was 24 years old at the time.  He was a corporal in the United States Army.  He was in domestic service from October 20th, 1942 to April 5th, 1944 and from October 6th, 1945 to October 12th, 1945.  In between both periods of domestic service, he was in foreign service from April 6th, 1944 to October 5th, 1945.  

On October 12th, 1945, he was honorably discharged at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland; he was 27 years old.  After the war, Davis lived at 108 West Fairfax Street in Falls Church, Virginia.  His application for Pennsylvania World War II veteran compensation was disallowed because he was not a resident of Pennsylvania when he entered active duty.  Davis died on February 28th, 1998.  He was buried in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, which is located in Nashville, Tennessee.
