James R. Manganello

James R. Manganello was born in 1917 to parents Saverio and Maria Manganello. The two originally were born in Italy but immigrated to the United States. They had 5 children; Mary, Joe, Frances, James, and Josephine. They lived on Longfellow Avenue in Vandergrift. On May 23, 1942 at 25 years old James Manganello enlisted in the United States Army. 

Manganello was assigned to the 313th infantry regiment of the 79th Division. The Division was sent to Camp Pickett in Virginia, later going to Camp Laguna near Yuma, Arizona for training in the desert. They were then sent to Camp Phillips, Kansas for training in winter conditions. At the beginning of April 1944, the division left from Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts and arrived in Liverpool on April 17th and began training in amphibious operations. 

On June 12-14 the 79th landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, and on the 19th first entered combat near Valognes. The division made their way through France pushing back the German opposition. But on December 13, 1944 James R. Manganello died in battle. He had achieved the rank of Technician Grade Five, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was buried in Lorraine, France.
