William A. Eshelman

William Alonzo Eshelman was born on March 14th, 1889 in Hyde Park, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  His mother was Mrs. Anna Eshelman, and his father was Mr. Winfield A. Eshelman.  Prior to World War I, he was employed by his father in his hometown of Hyde Park, where he worked as a miner.  At the time of World War I, William Eshelman was caucasian, medium height, and medium weight.  His eyes and hair were dark brown.  He entered the war and joined the United States Army when he was 28 years old.  He departed for World War I on September 30th, 1918 from Hoboken, New Jersey on a ship named the George Washington.  He became a private in the Company “C” 605th Engineers.  After World War I ended, he returned to the United States on June 19th, 1919, and was honorably discharged on June 23rd of that year.  According to the 1940 United States Federal Census, he moved to Decatur, Washington County, Ohio and worked as a coal operator.  He died on June 25th, 1961 at the age of 72 years old.  He was buried at Gravel Bank Cemetery in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.
