Guy Whitacre

Guy A. (Alvin) Whitacre was born about January of 1899 in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, March of 1917 in Columbus, Ohio. He was assigned to Fort Hamilton, New York with the Battery G 53rd Artillery until June 19, 1917. He was promoted to corporal on November 10, 1917. He was then assigned to the 8th Battery Howitzer Regiment until July 23, 1918. He was then promoted to Sergeant Major on July 19, 1918. He served overseas from November 10, 1917 until February 12, 1919. He fought in the Saint Mihiel Offensive from September 12-16, 1918. It was the first U.S. led offensive in World War I lead by General John Pershing. He also fought in the Argonne Forest from September 26, 1918 until October 26, 1918. This was the final Allied offensive of World War I and the second most lethal battle estimated by number of Americans killed. He was honorably discharged at Camp Dix, New Jersey on March 1, 1919, never receiving any wounds or injuries in action. After his discharge, he returned to Vandergrift where he served as Treasurer for the Board of Education of Vandergrift High School. He died August 1978 in Tarentum, Pa.
