Guy France

Guy W. “Peck” France is known for his service for the Army in Company D and in the 2nd Ammunition Train during World War I. Mr. France was born in February 2, 1900 in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. Serving as a fourteen-year-old in the Battles of Aisne, Aisne-Marne, and Meuse-Argonne, Mr. France drove a motorcycle for the Army and worked as a courier since he had a motorcycle license. Towards the end of the war, Mr. France drove the company car of Company D. After the war, Mr. France worked as an construction electrician journeyman until his retirement in 1962. He was a member of the first United Methodist Church of Vandergrift, The WWI Veterans Post of Apollo, the American Legion Post 114 of Vandergrift, Skyview Radio Club in Allegheny Township, the PA Army MARS and American Radio Relay League. The injuries he had were arthritis of his spine. Guy France lied about his age in order to join the Army.  Mr. France was born to Claude D. and Esther A. Gwinn France, and married Leota Campbell France. They birthed three children; a son, and two daughters. Their names were Robert C. France, Esther Jane France, and Cora Lee France, respectively. Mr. France died at age 80 on August 16, 1980 in his home at 10:30 a.m. His barual is in Vandergrift cemetery.
