Charles Baird

Charles A. Baird was born on March 9, 1893 in Buffington Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Annie Logan Baird and Henderson Baird. Mr. Charles Baird had only one dependant which was his wife, Ferne Baird. He was a caucasian, 24 year old male when he enlisted for World War I on September 18th, 1917 in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. He resided in Salina, Westmoreland County, PA. during the time of his enlistment for the war. Charles Baird served in the branch of the army beginning on the date of his enlistment. 

He maintained the primary duty of a saddler. The U.S. Army saddler was in charge of the repairs of all harness, horse, and all other leather equipment issued to the organization. He served overseas from February 27th 1918 to August 1st 1919. He was honorably discharged on August 13th, 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey.  Charles died on November 8, 1971 at age 78 and is buried in Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell.  His efforts toward the war show that even the simplest of tasks can change the course of the war.
