HIGH SCHOOL COURSES

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS

English I (9)

English 9 is designed to prepare students for professional-skills level work and to promote higher level thinking. The course focuses on the development of skills in the areas of grammar, literature, and composition. Emphasis is placed upon the reading of a novel, play, short stories, and/or other literary selections made by the instructor.

English II (10)

English 10 is a language arts class offering various literary selections, writing instruction and activities, and study aids that guide students in the learning process. The literary selections are organized by genre to encourage comprehensive study of the types of literature: short story, nonfiction, drama, poetry, and novels. This course puts emphasis on active reading and appreciation of literature. It encourages the growth of skills needed by students to become independent readers and writers.

English III (11)

English 11 will explore aspects of writing, such as grammar and style.  Students will also read and analyze literature, as well as explore literary elements in the text.  Assessments will be based on students' ability to illustrate their comprehension of the literature and exemplify appropriate writing skills.

English IV (12)

English 12 is a British and World Literature course. The course stresses preparation for college work and critical thinking in the areas of reading and writing. Students are expected to complete novels, short stories, and poems as well as be able to discuss, analyze, and evaluate these pieces. Students are also expected to have experience in writing multi-paragraph works as well as analysis through writing.

Contemporary English

This course will be offered as an English course selection to seniors whose interest lies in post-secondary success which includes integrating skills and concepts in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening as well as digital literacy. Students examine multiple genres of text to develop a sense of how particular genres are used today to represent ideas and events.  Students will examine nonfiction or informational texts with an emphasis on producing purposeful and independent models of expression.  Students will connect framework universal themes and people across cultures and times to  real-life reading, writing, speaking and listening opportunities likely to be experienced beyond high school.  Students will complete a project that  includes not only a writing component but also a presentation utilizing modern communication techniques and technology. 

Grade 12

MATH

Pre-Algebra

The goal of this course is to explain the concept of numbers and how they are manipulated, managed, and represented on the xy-coordinate system. The crucial skills gained in this course include analysis of numerical relations and spatial-visual understanding of graphing principles. The skills they learn in this course will stay with them throughout higher math education, and will prove useful in standardized testing, such as the NJASK, PSAT and SAT.

Algebraic Geometric Concepts/Academic Comprehensive Math

This is a Common Core Standards driven course, which includes an intense review of Algebra concepts. Topics in this course will include Number Sense, Linear Equations, Systems of Equations, Inequalities, Polynomials, Quadratic Equations and Data Analysis.

Algebra I

This course is designed to introduce the student to concepts of Algebra, and prepare him/her for future academic math courses. Topics in the course include real numbers, linear equations, and inequalities, polynomials, quadratic equations, and rational expressions and equations. Students taking this course must have an excellent background in arithmetic concepts and processes.

Algebra II

This is a 5-week course designed to review and enhance algebraic skills. The following topics will be taught in this course: linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, quadratic equations, and polynomial equations. Students will need to be able to print and scan in worksheets.

Geometry

This course is a very comprehensive overview of Euclidean geometry. Rigorous and precise mathematical language is used in problems involving both two and three-dimensional figures. It is intended to develop a thought process so that deductive reasoning may be applied to all facets of life, whether mathematical or non-mathematical in nature.

SOCIAL STUDIES

United States History I

This course examines the key events, people, developments, and concepts in United States History from the first English settlement in North America at Jamestown until the end of the 19th Century and the Gilded Age. Influential leaders, major events, social issues, and changes in culture will be studied throughout the development of the United States until 1900.

United States History II

This course is a study of the history and development of the United States from the start of the 20th century to present day. The course is based on the history, geography, and cultural development of the United States as well as how the U.S. influences the rest of the world.

American Government / Civics

This 5-week course is a study of Modern American Government and History; focusing on the details of Contemporary America.  Government structure, set-up according to Federalism, and contemporary government in action are focused on utilizing the backdrop of modern day America.

Modern World History   

This course is an investigation of 19th, 20th, and 21st century world history.  Students study the major political, economic, and social developments of those centuries, looking closely at their causes and consequences and the role of individual decision-making.

World Cultures

This course is an investigation of global cultures dating back to Ancient Times.  Topics include the rise and fall of civilizations with an emphasis on the culture they represent.  

Economics

Required for graduation from Kiski Area, this 5-week course covers basic economic theory and practice.  Topics include economics as a discipline, economic systems, price, business organizations, stocks and bonds, government, money and banking, international trade, and labor.

Sociology

Sociology is the study of human relationships.  The principle that each person should be privileged to play an active role in society is the central theme for the course.  The student should acquire a deeper knowledge of his social environment, assume his role as a citizen, and look on knowledge and information as a challenge to encourage activity in a society.  The students will be provided with a comprehensive examination of the basic concepts, principles, and methods central to the scientific study of sociology.  The tools of sociological inquiry then are to the study of contemporary social issues and events so that sociology becomes personally meaningful to the student.

Psychology

Psychology is taught as a college general psychology course. It is a survey of the major principles, research techniques and applications of contemporary psychology. Topics include the approaches to psychology, biological basis of behavior, cognitive processes, human development, personality and psychological disorders. 

Western Civilization

This course will focus on European History from the period of the Renaissance to the present. The course contains analysis of primary source documents and discussion.  Critical thinking and writing skills are emphasized. The student will be expected to do daily reading outside of class.

SCIENCE

Earth and Space Science

Students taking this 5-week credit recovery course will have multiple opportunities to explore and develop content knowledge about Earth's history and structure, landform processes, waters, and atmospheres.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science surveys key topic areas including the application of scientific process to environmental analysis; ecology; energy flow; earth systems; and atmospheric, land, and water science. This course will also include current topics and case studies related to Environmental Science.  

Chemistry

Chemistry is a student-centered, activity based chemistry curriculum.  Its purpose is to create an understanding of the various topics within chemistry such as the periodic table, the mole, gas laws, solutions, etc...It includes traditional chemical concepts and laboratory skills that are normally encountered in a standard high school chemistry text.  The use of algebraic mathematical skills is emphasized.  Reference to how chemistry affects a student's everyday life is also emphasized.  Problem solving and decision-making activities are involved.

Biology

This course is designed to give students a background of basic concepts in biology and hands-on experience through laboratory sessions. Through this course students will discover that although life on earth exists in a tremendous variety of forms, there is a fundamental unity found in all living things. Areas of study include the following: the characteristics of life, the various kingdoms of living things and organisms that represent those kingdoms, natural selection and evolution, basic carbon chemistry and biochemistry, the structure and function of cells, cellular reproduction, the flow of energy through living things via the processes of photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and fermentation, and the interrelationships that occur between organisms and their environment. In addition, the course will examine the role of DNA in living things, the function of the gene, patterns of inheritance, and the potential results of combining heredity with technology. 

Astronomy

Astronomy is a course full of exploration centered around the scale of the universe, how astronomers have learned to study the sky, the works of gravity, the behavior of light, the Moon, the details of our solar system, the life cycle of stars including the Sun, the makeup of our galaxy, other galaxies, theories regarding our universe, and the current field studies of today! 

Physical Science

Physical Science stresses an in depth understanding of the nature and structure of matter and the characteristics of energy.  Principles of Technology are studied as they apply to Physical Science.  This course will cover the following:  Physical and Chemical Changes, Work, Ecosystems, and an introduction to Force.

Principles of Technology

Principles of Technology presents physics in the context of conceptual understanding.  Topics will include motion, force, gravity, work, power and machines.  Each unit’s concepts will include notes, videos, assignments and assessments. 

Human Anatomy & Physiology

Human Anatomy & Physiology is a course that examines the inner workings of the human body.  From the cellular components to the mechanisms, this course focuses on how they interact to complete the tasks that allow the body to function.  Cell processes, tissue types, body systems, emergency care, pediatrics, geriatrics, and self health are all highlights studied throughout. 

Health and Physical Education

High School Physical Education (9-12)

This 5-week course focuses around encouraging the development of motor fitness, physical fitness, leadership, and cooperative skills.  This course is approved for credit recovery of one (9-12) PE course.

Health

This five-week course is designed to facilitate learning in an online environment. The course focuses on various lessons to enhance well being including nutrition, mental health, avoiding risky behaviors, and following an exercise plan. Students will be assessed using journal entries, quizzes and digital projects.

World Language

Spanish I

This is an introductory course that allows students to communicate in Spanish on a variety of topics by developing basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. 

Spanish II

This course builds on the concepts of Spanish I; it increases listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for students.  

BUSINESS

Computer Applications

Intro to Business Information Technology (Online) is an introductory business and information technology course. Students will investigate a variety of career options, learn how the business world operates, and be introduced to topics such as accounting, finance, marketing, management, information technology, and entrepreneurship. 

Personal Finance

Personal Finance is designed to assist students in the process of planning every aspect of their personal finances. The course includes planning of spending, borrowing, financing, saving, and investing in order to achieve the highest quality of life possible. This course will provide real-world applications, hands-on practice, and multiple assessment opportunities so that high school students will have the basic tools and knowledge to make informed financial decisions.

Google Apps

Using Google Apps will focus on several free Google Apps, such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sites, Google Calendar, Google Earth, etc. With Google's ever growing presence in the technology and software areas, it is essential that students learn to utilize these popular support tools. Google Apps will prove helpful in being more productive an efficient and it will teach students how to use Google Apps in real world applications.

Digital Imaging

Digital Imaging will give students an essential understanding of photo editing. The course is for anyone seeking a good foundation in order to use photo editing software to manipulate, modify, or optimize photographs and digital images. 

Sports and Entertainment Marketing

Students will learn about basic marketing principles while delving deeper into the multi-billion dollar sports and entertainment industry. Marketing is a tool that has allowed the U.S. economy to become highly successful internationally. Additionally, entertainment is one of the United State’s major exports. Students will develop a fundamental knowledge of marketing that relates sports and entertainment industries, and career possibilities available in the industries. This course applies marketing concepts, including target market, product, price, distribution and promotion, to the business of sports and entertainment. 

Introduction to Business

Intro to Business covers a unit of introductory business, from the dynamic business environment and organizational management to marketing and accounting. 

Business Law

This course is designed to offer an introductory view of our legal system and its laws.  It examines our court systems and trial procedures as well as other aspects of legal activities which influence the operation of a business and personal life activities.  Emphasis is also placed on the following topics: law and justice, courts systems, internet law, ethics, agency and employment law, property law, and contracts. 

Introduction to Coding

Students will learn the basics of the coding language Python. Python is an extremely versatile coding language that can be used in data management and in developing apps and websites. Throughout the course, students will be writing and running code. 

Video Game Design-KISKI STUDENTS ONLY

Video Game Design I is a course that will immerse students in the world of video games and how they are designed and developed. Students will use web-based software that emphasizes the design elements and structure of video game development. Students will also learn the history of video game design and be exposed to the career opportunities available in the video game industry. Projects in this course will include a platform game, a top-down game, an object-based game, an artificial intelligence game, a trivia game, and a capstone project where students will create their own game from scratch. 

Web Design-KISKI STUDENTS ONLY

Web Page Design  will utilize Adobe software, a web development tool, that creates dynamic web pages. It is designed for the beginner to intermediate designer who wants to learn how to use an industry standard software that will hopefully inspire them to create rich and exciting websites. Students will create multi-page sites containing text, images, hyperlinks, animation, and interactive elements without learning or writing code. They will use the many tools available in Adobe to create individual web pages as well as complex websites consisting of multiple web pages. This class is an in-person course and students will need to be in the classroom in order to utilize the software.

Middle School/Elementary Courses

English Language Arts

English 8*

This course focuses on reading and writing for various purposes, different writing techniques, English usage and mechanics, grammar, vocabulary development, and literature. Students will further their grammar usage skills, critical thinking skills, and reading/writing skills. All studies in this course focus on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards, as well as the standards of the Kiski Area School District.

English 7*

English 5*

The fifth grade ELA course has four main components: reading, writing, listening and speaking, and language. Math

Math 8*

This course is a study of real numbers, and their properties, algebraic expressions, the theory of equations and inequalities with emphasis on how to solve and graph them. This course is designed to prepare students for Pre-Algebra and/or Algebra I. 

Math 7*

This course sets a foundation in working with decimals, fractions and negative numbers. The course will introduce algebraic concepts such as variables and solving algebraic equations. The course will also touch on Order of operations, using the distributive property, evaluating expressions, solving one and two step equations, and comparing data. 

Math 6*

This course sets the foundation for students to enter the world of Algebra. It is the study of rational numbers, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals, algebraic expressions and equations, mathematical problem solving involving area, surface area and volume, and statistical analysis.  

Math 5*

This course is the study of place value, operations with multi-digit numbers, adding and subtracting fractions and decimals to the hundredths, displaying and interpreting data in different types of graphs, classifying 2-d figures, and understanding the volume of prisms. 

Social Studies

Social Studies 8*

This course focuses on American History concepts centering around Civics designed for the Middle School Student.  It will serve as an introduction to Civics and Early American History.

Social Studies 7*

This Middle School Level course focuses on Geography concepts based upon the five pillars of Geography.  Students will be asked to learn locations on the globe and interact with the various continents as part of their units.

Middle School World Geography


This course serves as an introduction to physical geography and human geography. This course will examine the geographic make-up of our planet, the Earth’s active processes, and how the Earth’s physical features influence human behavior. Students will study how different societies gain and use resources and how access to valuable resources can lead to conflict and tension. Students will examine the impact geography has on history, culture, economics and politics with the goal of improving student geographic literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills - all of which better prepare students for the challenges of an increasingly interconnected global community.

Social Studies 6*

This course is for 6th-grade social studies.  Over this session, students will focus on Pennsylvania history.  We will reexamine the First People of PA, the Physical and Natural Resources in PA, the Role of William Penn, the Birth of our Country, and the Impact PA had on the Industrial Revolution.  

Social Studies 5*

This course is for 5th-grade social studies.  Over this session, students will focus on the 13 British Colonies, Colonial Life, Issues with Great Britain, The Revolutionary War, and the Birth of our Nation.  

Science

Middle School Earth Science*

This middle school level Earth Science will include concepts about weather and climate, atmosphere, rocks and minerals, moon phases and plate tectonics.  

Middle School Life Science*

This 5 week Life Science course will examine the following topics: the processes of living things, classification of living things, plant growth and reproduction, animal growth & heredity, and energy & ecosystems.

Middle School Physical Science*

This 5 week Physical Science course will explore the properties of matter, energy, electricity, sound & light, and forces & motion.

Science 6*

Sixth grade Science focuses on Earth and Space Science and exploring the Earth from the inside out.  We start with the layers of the Earth and how our Earth is constantly changing, journey through different cycles such as water and rock and then ascend through the atmosphere to explore weather and space. 

Science 5*

Fifth grade Science is divided into two sections. First we take a look at ecology and how plants and animals are classified. Then we switch gears, literally, and experiment with forms of energy, properties and changes in matter. 

Health and Physical Education

Middle School Health*

This credit recovery course is designed to facilitate learning in an online environment.  Online Health teaches the three domains of health including emotional, physical and social.  The course offers various lessons on enhancement of well being and educates the student about healthy living.  Students will be assessed through quizzes, journal entries and digital projects.

Middle School Physical Education*

This credit recovery course is designed to facilitate learning in an online environment.  The student will be expected to enhance his or her well being through participation in physical education activities such as exercise logs, digital projects, journal entries, and quizzes.  The course offers various lessons about personal fitness achievement and focuses on the student's effort to reach positive results.

Elementary Physical Education*

Elementary PE Credit Recovery  helps students establish a basic understanding of health and fitness.  Students will be introduced to, review and practice health related skills and learn how to become more fit and healthy.  Topics include: Importance of Physical Education, Cardiovascular Fitness, Muscular Strength, Motor Skills, Warm Up/Cool Down,  and ways to make exercising fun!  Students will be required to participate and document physical activity regularly.
