“Best Practice in Literacy” is evolving. Reading and Writing Workshop of 2019 isn't the R/W Workshop of today. Whether you’re new to workshop or looking to grow some next generation practices, this workshop is for you. Start the year with fresh, new ideas for engaging, effective, evidence-based literacy. We’ll keep this practical, practical, practical! You’ll leave with lots of tips to implement and empower your teaching right away.
Target audience:
Teachers who are new and experienced in using the workshop approach to teaching reading and writing.
School leaders looking to improve their knowledge base around elementary and middle school literacy instruction.
In this session, participants will:
Explore what all students need to grow as readers and writers.
Develop strategies to leverage the heart of the workshop time.
Inquire into how to use feedback and feedforward to raise the level of writing.
Engage in learning and discussion around what matters most for reading instruction.
Cailin Minor is an internationally experienced educator, literacy coach, and curriculum specialist. She has worked extensively with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project Units of Study curriculum as well as teaching reading and writing through the workshop model. Cailin is passionate about instructional coaching, and holds an advanced certificate in Cognitive Coaching. She currently serves as a senior strategist for Erin Kent Consulting where she specializes in supporting schools in launching and sustaining a Readers/Writers Workshop model in a way that supports a school’s unique needs.
Molly Ball has worked as an IB classroom teacher, curriculum developer, and literacy coach in the United States, Korea, and Singapore. She has led teachers in curriculum development with a specific focus on unpacking standards and benchmarks to create tailored reading and writing units that align with and/or enhance units of inquiry. Molly is passionate about emergent literacy in the Early Years and the many ways that we can amplify student choice and agency through play, inquiry, and balanced literacy components. Currently, Molly is a Literacy Coach at Stamford American International School in Singapore.
