Jeju island is located in the Korea Strait and is a Natural World Heritage Site containing Jeju's famous lava tubes (caves) and oreums (volcanic cones). Jeju-do province has a moderate climate; even in winter, the temperature rarely falls below 0 °C (32 °F). Jeju is a popular holiday destination and a sizable proportion of the economy relies on tourism.
Outdoor Activities
The island offers visitors a wide range of activities such as hiking on Hallasan, South Korea’s highest mountain or Olle-gil (long-distance walks), Oreums (volcanic cone hills), catching, sunrises and sunsets over the ocean, riding horses, fishing, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, touring all the locales from a favorite K-drama, or just lying around on the sandy beaches.
Hallasan
At 1,950m, Hallasan is Jeju’s most distinctive landmark, and South Korea’s highest peak. Furthermore, it is one of Jeju’s three UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites. You can hike up and down in a day if you start very early. Avoid the rain clouds of summer in favor of springtime flowers and autumn foliage.
Hallasan National Park
Only two routes allow to reach the peak of Hallsan (Gwaneumsa trail and Seongpanak trail).
★ Important ★ From January 2021, Jeju province has decided that all visitors must make a reservation for Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa trails. Reservation website / Reservation Intro / Reservation Fee
Lava Tubes (caves)
Another UNESCO Geopark, the Manjanggul Cave is more than eight kilometers long and you can walk one kilometer of its eerie passageway. Formed by cooling lava, the cave is dark, cold, often narrow, and slippery. Watch out for the bats too.
Olle-gil and Oreum hills
Olle is a word in the local dialect which refers to the paths between houses and public roads. The Jeju Olle Trail, called Jeju Olle-gil or “Jeju olle” in Korean, is a long-distance footpath that circles the entire island. The courses mostly following the coastline, consist of 21 connected trails.
One of the most distinctive features of Jeju island is the approximately 360 Oreums (volcanic hills cones) scattered everywhere. These are small parasitic volcanoes formed as Jeju island was created. They make for excellent hiking and many of these Oreums have well-developed trails and great views.
There are also package tours for foreign hikers with English-speaking guides providing opportunities to get familiar with some of the many Jeju Olle Trails.
Scuba Diving in Jeju
Arguably the favorite holiday and dive destination in South Korea, this large volcanic island on the south coast is a stunning destination. During the dive season, there is an abundance of marine life including nudibranch, abalones, and frogfish. The range of soft corals surprises many divers with a magnitude of colorful walls to explore on various sites. Mun Island and Sup Island are two popular dive sites where you can experience the best of Jeju Island.
