KIPP Comienza Community Prep is a free college-preparatory public charter elementary school that opened in the summer of 2010 in the Southeastern City of Los Angeles. The Upper School opened in the summer of 2016. KIPP Comienza is a part of the national KIPP network of 162 schools in 20 states and D.C.; it currently serves 520 students in kindergarten through fourth grade, and 250 5th/6th grade students for the 2017-18 school year.
KIPP Comienza Community Prep is built on the belief that great schools and strong relationships transform communities. The mission of KIPP Comienza is to teach the academic skills, cultivate the character traits, provide the learning experiences, and forge the community relationships needed for our elementary students to thrive in middle school, high school, college, and life.
Comienza is the Spanish action verb: begin. But the significance of comienza is lost when simply translated into “begin.” Comienza evokes a sense of immediate action, an action that may ignite a new beginning towards voice; towards strength; towards change.
KIPP Comienza aims to strengthen our students’ self-identify and build a collective spirit by which children feel personally responsible for their own success and work to support the success of others in their classroom, school, and community. As a school, we will provide the knowledge, skills, and experiences all students need to be successful through college and stay committed to positively impacting their community.
We are located in the beautiful community of Huntington Park, California. We currently share a campus with Miles Elementary School which is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Our main office is located on the Saturn Ave gate.
