In the Edo period, about 300 years ago, worn-out silk was burned into ashes and sprinkled in fields as fertilizer. The rain returned it to the soil, nourishing the mountains, purifying the rivers, and protecting the seas of Japan. When I learned about this cycle of silk returning to nature, I realized it was not a culture of the past, but a living wisdom deeply relevant to our modern world.

ABOUT
She is a fashion stylist and textile-based artist exploring memory, body, and regeneration through vintage kimono and hand-stitching. Active as a freelance fashion stylist since 1987, working across advertising, publishing, film, and education. In 1998, she presented early works using vintage kimono textiles in New York. The collection was selected by PHER (now MAYLE) and Fred Segal in Los Angeles, gaining international recognition and exposure through figures such as Naomi Campbell and Nicole Kidman. Her practice has since evolved across styling, visual direction, and textile-based creation, moving between fashion and culture as a continuous field of expression. Following this early international recognition, she entered a long period of quiet refinement and deep exploration of expression. In 2016, she founded KinuJapanDesigns, a project transforming the memory and cultural lineage of vintage kimono into contemporary one-of-a-kind garments. Her work focuses on the intrinsic power of silk to hold, protect, and restore the body and mind, creating handcrafted pieces that carry both material and emotional memory. To date, her works have reached collectors in over 27 countries through online presence and word of mouth.
STATEMENT
My work is to infuse Japanese silk and craftsmanship into the language of global classic design.
Just as kimono has been passed down through time, I believe that what is truly inherited is not only its form, but also the stories of love, memories, and the timeless values that reside within it.
