Kinship (then Fairmont Area Kinship) was created when residents of Fairmont identified a community need for youth mentoring. In 1999, after attending a Blandin Leadership Retreat, Greg Brolsma began pulling together a group of individuals to start a mentoring program. A decision was made to affiliate with Kinship, Inc., a youth mentoring organization that serves communities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Kinship is one of approximately 19 affiliates of Kinship, Inc.
In 2016, Kinship merged with another local mentoring organization that served communites in Martin County outside Fairmont - Martin County Mentoring Network. Fairmont Area Kinship became Kinship of Martin County and now serves the entirety of Martin County, Minnesota.
Kinship has a new location and is now located at 119 East 2nd St., Fairmont, MN, at the United Methodist Church.
