(1st and 2nd Grades)
1.G.A.3 requires students to partition circles and rectangles into equal parts and name the parts using phrases such as “one half” or “one fourth”.
This pictorial-to-language translation provides a base for understanding the part-to-whole relationship.
Students name the pieces with word labels rather than symbols.
Draw to show multiple same- size shapes within a circle or rectangle. (Lesson 16.1)
Draw to show equal or unequal shares in a circle or rectangle. (Lesson 16.2)
Draw and color to show halves and fourths of circles and rectangles. (Lessons 16.3–16.4)
From there, students in second grade (2.G.A.2 and 2.G.A.3) expand into partitioning thirds,
develop an understanding of how a whole can be represented as three thirds, four fourths, two halves, etc
and learn equal shares do not need to be the same shape.
Partition rectangles into same-sized squares and find the total number of these squares. (Lesson 22.1)
Identify, name, and partition equal shares of circles and rectangles as halves, thirds, or fourths. (Lessons 22.2–22.4)
Use visual models to show that equal shares of the same wholes do not need to have the same shape. (Lesson 22.5)
