VARSITY GAMING

KINGSWOOD OXFORD ESPORTS is a co-ed, co-curricular, competitive video gaming program in which new and experienced gamers learn, practice, and compete in several individual and team-based PC and Nintendo games. Our school registers with PlayVS, a national organization that partners with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Our team currently plays in the Eastern Regional League, competing against public and private schools along the East Coast.

FITNESS

Keeping in line with current fitness trends in collegiate and professional esports, and in keeping with the Kingswood Oxford tradition of creating intelligent, capable, and healthy student-athletes, the Varsity Esports team also engages in regular fitness as a way of supporting students' physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The team exercises together three to five times each week (depending on match schedule), completing a rotation cardio, upper-/lower-/total-body strength, and stretching workouts, with accommodations made for a range of fitness levels and needs.

OUR GAMES

SPLATOON 3

SPLATOON 3 is a 4v4 action game in which teams play through a handful of different game modes, including map coverage (Turf War), capture the flag (Rainmaker and Clam Blitz), payload escort (Tower Control), and zone control (Splat Zones).

Players take on the role of Inklings and Octolings – characters with a kid form for combat and objectives and a squid or octopus form for fast movement – who wield weapons that deal damage and cover terrain in ink that matches their team’s color.

The goal of SPLATOON 3 varies by game type. Each match consists of one game of each type. In general, however, covering the most terrain in your team’s ink and “splatting” the other team is the path to victory.

Each “match” consists of 5 games, one of each game type, with wins and losses within a match counting towards a team’s regular season standings.

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS ULTIMATE

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS ULTIMATE is a fighting simulation game that features over 90 different popular characters from video games past and present, played on Nintendo Switch. Teams of 3 compete in a 1v1 format of what is essentially King of the Hill.

In the game, player characters take damage from attacks. The more damage a character has taken, the easier it is to knock that character off the map. Each player has three lives, called “stocks”, before they lose a game.

The goal of SUPER SMASH BROTHERS ULTIMATE is to knock your opponent off the map three times before you are knocked off instead.

Each “match” consists of three separate three-game sets, one for each member of a team. Winning a set awards a team a single point, and the match “winner” is the team with the most points. Points apply to a team’s regular season standings.

MARIO KART 8 DELUXE

MARIO KART 8 DELUXE is a traditional racing game played on Nintendo Switch. In our league, teams consist of four players racing to score points over the course of several 6-race series

Throughout a game of MARIO KART 8 DELUXE, players use unique characters and vehicles (karts or motorcycles), random item drops, and knowledge of both general course layouts and challenging time-saving shortcuts to try to place as high up the ladder as possible. The higher a racer places, the more points they earn for their team. Racer scores are combined into a single team score over the course of a 6-race series, with the winner having the most points at the end.

Each MARIO KART 8 DELUXE match consists of a best-of-three series set.

ROCKET LEAGUE

ROCKET LEAGUE is a 3v3 version of soccer, played on PC. Players drive rocket-propelled cars across the field, up the arena walls, and into the air to dribble, pass, and strike a large ball into the opposing team’s goal.

Rocket league is a fast-paced, high-dexterity game that requires sharp reflexes, precise maneuvering, quick communication, and situational awareness.

The goal of ROCKET LEAGUE is to score more points than your opponent in each game.

Each “match” consists of a best-of-5 game set. Wins and losses within the match count towards a team’s regular season standings
