Spelling in fifth grade :
Each spelling list consists of 20 words and is initially studied for one week. Each week there is a skill focus that the list reinforces.
On Monday we introduce the new words during ELA Literacy Block. The children will then be expected to complete that day's assigned spelling homework in their spelling notebook. They must complete one spelling assignment for each day Monday through Thursday each Week. The Spelling Test will be given on Friday using the new set of words introduced on Monday.

In Literacy, we are immersed in our World War II unit. Students will be reading one of two novels:
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated," Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life.
I Am David by AnneHolm
David's entire twelve-year life has been spent in a grisly prison camp in Eastern Europe. He knows nothing of the outside world. But when he is given the chance to escape, he seizes it. With his vengeful enemies hot on his heels, David struggles to cope in this strange new world, where his only resources are a compass, a few crusts of bread, his two aching feet, and some vague advice to seek refuge in Denmark. Is that enough to survive?
