Language Arts with Mrs. Kurtz
About Me: I grew up in a family of eleven kids, eight of which graduated from Xavier University. I am a huge fan of all things Cincinnati. Reds, Bengals, Xavier Basketball - and yes - even UC Basketball!
I began my teaching career in 1990 as the High School Media Specialist. I recall being very excited and nervous entering my first year. This is my 31st year as an educator in the Kings District and I’m just as excited and nervous as I was year one!
I came to Columbia in 1998. During the years I have been at Columbia I have taught Reading, 5th grade Social Studies and Language Arts, Media Specialist, 6th grade Social Studies and Language Arts, which brings us to the current school year. I once again will be the Language Arts teacher for the Knoble Knights!
I have been married for 29 years to my amazing husband, Bill. We have two incredible children. Madeline (23) is a graduate of Bellarmine University in Louisville and works for the Cincinnati School of Music. Conrad (20) is incredibly excited to begin his junior year at The Ohio State.
Let’s have a great school year!
The year will begin with a read-aloud of the novel Freak The Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick. This is a wonderful story about two young men who form an unbreakable bond, while learning to navigate the challenging life they were handed.
After the completion of the first read-aloud we will learn about a young hero who was raised in war torn Southern Sudan during tumultuous civil wars. Students will be amazed by the compassion, forgiveness and determination of Salva Dut as they follow his story from young boy into adulthood.
