Scheduling Process + Guidelines
- February: Grade level scheduling meetings will be held for students to receive scheduling information. Students will receive Course Request Sheets.
- Late February: Students return Course Request Sheets
- March-April: Master schedule is completed based on current staffing, enrollment and student requests.
- May 1: Schedule change requests after this date will be examined on an individual basis for educational reasons only.
- August: Student schedules released.

Course Placement + Designations
Students should select courses that align with their academic readiness, performance, as well as their immediate and future goals. Teacher recommendations and demonstrated achievement should serve as primary guides for course selection. Course designations reflect the level of rigor and challenge of the course content.

Placement into accelerated and honors courses at Kings Junior High is based on recommendation from teachers. Recommendations are based on several factors including academic performance and standardized test scores.

If parents/guardians wish to request a different course than what was recommended, they should contact their child's current teacher to discuss the recommendation, and obtain a Request for Placement Change form.

Honors (H) These courses provide grade-level content delivered with increased rigor, depth, and complexity for students who demonstrate readiness for advanced academic expectations. Instruction emphasizes critical thinking, analysis, application, and independent learning.
*High-school level Honors courses carry high school credit and are weighted +0.5 in student's GPA
Accelerated (A) These courses provide above grade-level content for students who demonstrate readiness for advanced academic study. Emphasis is placed on mastery of advanced concepts, problem-solving, and application of knowledge to prepare students for future coursework.

We do not take Team or Teacher requests. If there are concerns about a student’s schedule it is recommended that you share these concerns with Administration or School Counselor during the course request process (February-April). We will do our best to assist in working through these concerns.

Courses for High School Credit
Courses for High School Credit
Any courses taken for High School credit will appear on the student’s High School Transcript and will be calculated into their GPA. Students can no longer have these courses removed from their high school transcript.

Students should make course selections that reflect their interest and academic readiness. Once the Master Schedule is built and set on May 1st, requests to make a change can be constrained based on availability, need, and merit. The school may make schedule adjustments when necessary to support a student's academic progress or overall school functioning.

Student requests and changes after May 1st and before the start of the school year will be evaluated on an individual basis for educational reasons or other exceptional circumstances, as determined by the school.

- Inappropriate course level for core classes (Accelerated or Honors vs. Non-Accelerated/Honors placement)
- Incomplete schedule (student is not scheduled for enough bells)
- Obvious scheduling error, such as the omission of a required class
- Changes to electives that better distribute students across courses
Students should email their school counselor to request a schedule change.
Course Level Changes
Course level changes refer to any moves between levels in the same subject matter. For example, a move DOWN from Honors Algebra I to Algebra I OR a move UP from English to Honors English.
Once a student, teacher AND parent recognize that the level of difficulty is such that the student is either not successful or is not challenged enough, a level change may occur. It is suggested that students transfer before or by the middle of the quarter or at an appropriate time determined by the teachers involved. All previously earned grades will transfer to the new course level.

- A request to drop or change a class must be made within the first THREE days of the start of a new semester. These requests are made to a student’s Counselor.
- Changes will depend on the availability of courses.
- Any changes made after THREE days into a semester require Administrative approval.
