literacy - writing a letter
In this Literacy sequence, the children explored letter writing through the book Dear Mother Goose by Michael Rosen. The learning focused on using and as a conjunction, writing questions, using capital letters for names, places, and at the start of a sentence, and correctly using the pronoun “I.”
The children explored the text together and took part in role play as Mother Goose, discussing the problems faced by different nursery rhyme characters. They then took on the role of a new nursery rhyme character and wrote a letter to Mother Goose, explaining their problem and asking for help.
This sequence supported the children in developing their writing skills while using their imagination, speaking in role, and writing for a clear purpose and audience.
maths - addition and subtraction within 20
maths - shape
The children learned about 2D and 3D shapes. They practised talking about what they notice and sorting shapes using key vocabulary. For 2D shapes, the children looked at the number of sides and corners (vertices), and talked about whether the sides are straight or curved. For 3D shapes, they explored faces and vertices. The children then worked collaboratively to build and sort shapes based on their properties, sharing ideas and using maths language together. Art -print making
Our focus in art has been on printing in spring term.
This week, children explored print making using primary colours and different types of evergreen leaves.
computing - parts of a computer
In computing, the children have been learning about the different parts of a computer and how to use devices safely. They practised important skills such as logging in independently using a username and password.
The children learned how to use a mouse or trackpad to control the cursor and open a painting programme on their browser. They then used these skills to draw their own pictures. This has helped to develop the children’s independent computing skills and confidence when using technology.
Following on from this, children used their computer skills to create abstract art works in the style of artist Piet Mondrian.
computer safety - walking trip to southmead
Year 1 and 2 children went to visit Southmead Primary School to learn about online safety. We talked about why it’s important not to talk to strangers on the internet, even if they say they are children or seem friendly. The children learned that people online may not always be who they say they are, and that if anything ever makes them feel unsure or worried, they should stop and find a trusted adult straight away for help.
science - materials and their porperties
In science, the children used their understanding of objects, materials and their properties to explore the question: Would we like to use a chocolate teapot?
The children worked collaboratively, using their oracy skills to share ideas, listen to one another and explain their thinking. They drew on their prior knowledge of different materials and used creative thinking to decide what properties a teapot needs, such as being strong, waterproof and heat-resistant.
The children then named a range of materials and sorted objects based on the materials they are made from, explaining their choices using simple scientific language.
