English

In our Literacy this term, we have been busy learning a story called 'Toby and the Great Fire of London'. After learning the story with actions, maps and mountains we then changed the story to 'Mary and the Great Fire of London'. Again we looked at learning this story through actions, maps and mountains. Finally, we looked at creating our own story where we could change the character, setting or even the event, if we wanted. And WOW! what ideas we had!

We have also been working hard with Super Sonic Phonic Friends with recapping our Switch It Spell Sounds as well as our spellings 'tion', 'le', 'el', 'al', 'il', and contractions, to mention only a few!

Maths

This term in our maths lessons, we have been concentrating on our number bonds to ten. We have been trying to make sure this is embedded in our brain to help us spot relationships when adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.

We have been looking at using a strategy called bridging 10.  This is where we have been using our number bonds to ten to add to the next multiple of ten. We have been partitioning one of the addends and adding the other part to get our total. With our subtraction, we have partitioned our minuend to find the previous multiple of ten and then using our number bonds to ten to help us find the difference.

Fire! Fire!

In history this term we have looked at so much! We started off looking at The Gunpowder Plot. We learned all about Guy Fawkes but also what happened during the plot. We looked at how the plotters were faced with problems and how they got over them but then how the plot was discovered and stopped. We then started looking at the Great Fire of London and where this appears on our timeline in class. We discovered so much about how it started, who was at fault, why it became so bad and how it was stopped. We also discovered, as historians, what the problems were with the fire. We have also compared it to another disaster that has happened within living memory, Grenfell Tower. We have looked at the similarities and differences between the two.
