All staff at King Edward are deliver a broad, balanced, relevant, challenging and differentiated curriculum. The main components of our curriculum are the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and the National Curriculum, which are drawn up by the Department for Education (DfE).
Wherever possible, the learning that takes place within the classroom is supported by making the best possible use of our whole school site, the local community and specific educational visits including residential trips.
We have a holistic approach to learning and promote mindfulness and resilience to give children a rounded education that prepares them for high school and later life. Our school dogs, Nigel and Winnie, are companions to all children in school, supporting their wellbeing and social and emotional development.
Our school is an accessible and inclusive school. Across the whole school site, our classes are organised as far as possible to allow us to provide the smoothest transition we can from each year group and phase. We have two main buildings and have a number of facilities which support and enhance children's learning experience. As well as our classrooms, our children can access: school field, yards, outdoor play features, school garden, gymnasium, library, cookery room, community room.
We offer 15 hours per week free early education for 3 and 4 year olds in our Nursery. We also offer an additional 15 hours for eligible families through our KEEP (King Edward Extended Provision).
Nursey, the KEEP and Reception are all sited in the Early Years building. Regular liaison meetings, joint planning and shared activities ensure good continuity of educational provision.
Year 1 is located in the Early Years building. This helps to ensure a streamlined transition from EYFS to Year 1. The planning in Year 1 builds on and mirrors much of that found within Reception as pupils further develop their readiness for learning.
Year 2 and Year 3 are located alongside one another on the ground floor of the main building, alongside the main school hall where children have lunch and assemblies.
Our oldest children are situated on the top floor of the main building. The top landing provides a number of spaces for group work outside of the classroom.
As children move through the upper phase, they are encouraged to become increasingly independent, reflective and responsible for their own learning.
All staff work closely together to ensure cohesive delivery of the curriculum right from Early Years to Year 6.
We are very lucky to have an Out of School Club (OOSC) on site providing before and after school childcare during term time, as well as full day childcare during school holidays. This is a paid service which provides a 'home from home' experience for children in Nursery to Year 6. You can contact our OOSC on 0191 2708889 or oosc@kingedward.org. OOSC is an Ofsted registered childcare provider (URN108573).
