Hi, KIS families—Mr. Sarakowski here.
It is hard to believe that Friday is already the first day of school!
A quick reminder: our entire district will be attending convocation tomorrow morning, including our main office secretaries. The office team will return at approximately 1:30 p.m.
We know some families are still having difficulty accessing ParentSquare or PowerSchool, and we understand how frustrating that can be. These systems are new across the district—not only for families, but for many of us as well. Getting everyone started will be a significant one-time lift, and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we learn together.
Most importantly, please don’t panic if your child does not know their homeroom—or even where to go when they arrive. Any student who walks through our doors will be welcomed and guided to the right place. It is always all hands on deck at KIS on the first morning, and we extend homeroom so every child has time to get settled.
The drop-off line will also be the busiest it will be all year. If it moves slowly or your child enters the building a little late, please don’t worry. We understand.
The first day brings a few butterflies for everyone—students, families, teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries, and administrators. We will be ready to reassure anxious students, solve the problems that arise, and begin the year together.
Please also review the transportation information below. Changes submitted this close to the opening of school will require additional processing time.
We’ve got this. Thank you for your patience, your partnership, and—most of all—for entrusting your children to our care. We cannot wait to welcome them on Friday and begin what we hope will be a wonderful year.

SPECIAL VIDEO FOR 5TH GRADE FAMILIES
Reporting Absences: Call the attendance line at 860-779-6739. Upon returning, students should bring a signed note or doctor’s note explaining the absence.
School Day Hours: 7:15 AM – 2:15 PM
We won't be marking students tardy until September 14th. After that date, any student arriving after 7:20 AM will be marked tardy.

Auditorium – For students arriving by bus, GRADES 6, 7 & 8
For all 5th-grade students: There will be signs directing students to the small gym, where staff will organize them by homeroom.
Cafeteria – For students participating in the school breakfast program (please note: breakfast ends promptly at 7:15 AM)
Daily Transportation Changes: Must be communicated by 1:00 PM on regular days and 11:00 AM on early release days.
Early Dismissals: Must occur by 1:45 PM. After that time, students must be picked up via the parent pickup line.
Parent Pickup Location: Drop-off and pickup occur at the rear of the building. Parents may not enter the pickup line until 1:45 PM. If arriving earlier, please park in the lot near the baseball field. We ask that parents pull up as far as possible to ensure the pickup line keeps moving.

As of today, we have 17 Fall athletes who do not have their medical information uploaded into Final Forms. The first day of tryouts will be August 31st.

Families may notice that their child’s team color has changed this year. Please know that the Red and White team designations do not carry any special meaning or identity. They are simply an organizational tool that helps teachers, the front office, and administrators group students for scheduling, announcements, events, and other school routines.
This year, we have also adjusted how students are distributed across teams to create a more balanced structure based on student needs and class sizes.
Because many factors are considered when building schedules—including class-size balance, staffing, services, and specials—we are unable to accommodate requests to change teams, classes, or specials based on friendships or preferences.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to create balanced schedules that support all students.
Class schedules are now viewable on PowerSchool. In the near future, we'll be relying on ParentSquare for schedule information

JumpRope & Grading at KIS
JumpRope is the platform used at Killingly Intermediate School to keep track of student progress in academic classes. Student progress is based on a student’s ability to demonstrate their understanding of the various standards associated within each curricular area.
Grading at Killingly Intermediate School is not based on the standard “A-F” range, but rather on a Proficiency-Based scale of “emerging, progressing, and proficient.”

All students entering seventh grade must have the following health documentation on file before the start of school:
An updated immunization record showing the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines
A physical examination completed on or after June 1, 2025
Families who have not yet submitted these records should contact their child’s healthcare provider and ask that the documentation be faxed to the KIS nurse’s office at 860-779-6725. Copies or clear photographs of the records may also be emailed to the school.
If your child still needs a physical examination or immunizations, please schedule an appointment as soon as possible and notify the nurse’s office of the appointment date.
Please note that the KIS nursing staff will not return to the building until August 20. Families may therefore not receive confirmation that records have been received until after that date. However, please do not wait until August 20 to request or submit the documentation. These records are required for students to enter seventh grade.
