Biosensors and Human-Machine Interface Laboratory (BHMI)
The BHMI research group, led by Soongwon Cho, focuses on the development of next generation biochemical sensing technologies for both fundamental studies and translational biomedical applications. Our research integrates advances in nanobiosensors, wearable microfluidics, microdroplet systems, lateral flow assays, lab-on-a-disc platforms, and unconventional chemical sensing strategies.
We are particularly interested in creating non-invasive and continuous monitoring systems that can access diverse biofluids such as sweat, interstitial fluids, bioaerosols and skin gases. By leveraging innovations in micro/nanofabrication, materials science, and biointerface engineering, we aim to detect a wide range of clinically relevant biomarkers with high sensitivity, specificity, and continuity.
Beyond individual sensing components, our laboratory emphasizes system level integration, combining sensing, signal processing, and data interpretation, to enable real-time health monitoring and personalized clinical assessment. Ultimately, we envision an AI-enhanced closed-loop human machine biointerface that connects biosensing with feedback systems, including therapeutic intervention and drug delivery.
Through this approach, BHMI research group seeks to contribute to the realization of an autonomous healthcare ecosystem, where continuous physiological monitoring and intelligent decision making improve disease prevention, early diagnosis, and personalized reactive treatment.
Professor Soong Won Cho
Prof. Soong Won Cho obtained his Bachelor's (2009) and Ph.D (2013) in Chemistry from Imperial College London, where he specialized in droplet microfluidics and confocal fluorescence microscopy under the guidance of Professor Andrew deMello (ETH Zurich) and Professor Joshua Edel (Imperial College London).
He then served as a Senior Engineer at Samsung Display from 2012 to 2020, where he developed state-of-the-art flexible and rigid LCD and OLED display technologies. During this time, he served as a panel development DRI (Directly Responsible Individual) for key Apple and Samsung products, including Iphones, Ipads, Galaxy fold, Galaxy flip, and Macbook displays.
From 2021 to 2026, he was a postdoctoral researcher in Professor John A. Rogers' group, focusing on next generation wearable and point-of-care biosensing technologies. His work has resulted in leading author publications in premier journals, including Nature Biomedical engineering, Science Translational Medicine, Nature Sensors, and Nature Reviews Nephrology.
In March 2026, he joined Kyung Hee University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. His research focuses on non-invasive biosensing platforms for real-time biochemical monitoring, integrating advances in soft materials, microfluidics, nanoplasmonic assays, and bioelectronic systems.
