Welcome Letter

Welcome to Grade 6

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a great summer. I am so excited to have your child in my class this year. I can assure you that this will be a fantastic school year where your child will continue to develop independence & responsibility, explore interests, and learn about the world we live in. I will be teaching Grade 6 Social Studies, English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. We are going to have an amazing school year together.

Know your Teacher

My name is Jyoti Kahlon. I was born and raised in India. I come from a family of educators, my mother is a retired postgraduate teacher/lecturer, and my dad was a chief technician with Alliance Airlines & Indian Airlines. and a pilot instructor. I always wanted to become a teacher, with a dream to make a difference in the lives of my students.

I am an Internationally trained and Alberta-certified teacher with more than 3 decades of teaching experience in various countries (India, the Middle East & Canada). I have received my Bachelor’s Degree in Education in English and Special English, a Master in Science degree in Ecology and Environment, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Educational Research from the University of Calgary, Canada. Teaching to me is not a job, but it is my passion, my dream and I am truly dedicated to the profession. Teaching gives purpose and meaning to my life.

Homework Expectations

I generally try to give the students enough class time to complete assignments. However, as the due date approaches, your child may have some finishing up to do. If students are using their class time wisely, there should not be much homework assigned. I will post major assignments, projects, tests, and quiz dates on my website under the tab: Homework 6. I give a lot of notice for due dates so that the students have enough time to prepare and finish their work. Please have your child speak with me regarding conflicts prior to the due date, if necessary. I also post all assignments, projects, textbook pages, lesson sheets, etc. on the Khalsa School Calgary Website – Mrs. Kahlon, under curriculum in the appropriate subject folder.  If your child is away for any reason, all of the work he/she requires is included in the subject folders.

Study Habits

Grade six is an important year in terms of developing good study habits. If students do not have assigned homework for the evening, they should be spending 15 – 20 minutes reviewing material covered in a subject area. The vocabulary in Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies is challenging. Regular review for short periods of time throughout the year will be extremely beneficial to your child at the end of the year when writing the Provincial Achievement Tests.  I also encourage you to have your child share his/her classwork with you on a regular basis. That way, you will be able to ask questions and see how well he/she understands the material throughout a particular unit.

Sixth grade is an exciting time as students emerge as “middle schoolers” with unique social, emotional, and academic characteristics. I look forward to working together with you to prepare for the transition to middle school! Parent support will be greatly appreciated throughout the entire school year.
