Dearest parents and students,
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather today.
Here's what we did today:
In Language Arts,
We wrote in our journals in 5B about the following Terry Fox quote:
"It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try to help others."
Grade 5A will write in their journals tomorrow.
We began working on our animal essays today. Please DO NOT work on these at home because we are working on them together as a class. We are learning how to use the Burger Format to write our essays. There is information attached below about how to write an essay using this format.
In Social Studies,
We are learning about the Native Peoples. Questions 1-15 on the attached handout must be completed tonight using the internet.
A reminder that spelling sentences and current events are due on Friday.
I had MANY students stay in at recess today because they did not complete their homework. Please ask your child if they stayed in. It is very important for your child to complete their homework daily because this is all part of our learning in Grade 5.
Please remember to DONATE for Terry Fox. You can also donate online if that's easier.
Your child also has to complete 20 prodigy questions.
Friday is casual day because of our Terry Fox run.
Have a great evening!
Good day dearest parents and students,
We had another busy day today. Here's what we did:
In 5B - we talked about September 30 and what "truth and reconciliation" means. We will be discussing the First Nations often throughout the year. Please ask your child what we talked about today!
Students were given back their spelling tests today in 5A and 5B. Please ask your child their mark out of 30.
We also talked about plagiarism and how students are NOT allowed to copy work that was written by others.
"Plagiarism is when you use someone else's words or ideas and pass them off as your own."
Please visit this very important website with your kids!!
https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/plagiarism.html
Students in 5A were also given their Fancy Bread reading comprehension. It was marked out of 9. 5B will receive theirs tomorrow. Ask for the mark please.
Tomorrow - we have a "check in" about the federal election that is taking place on September 20. Please review the study material with your child. I encourage all parents (dads AND moms) to vote. Please consider voting. We are living in a democracy and this is a privilege we should all cherish.
I have attached the study notes for the Federal Election check in tomorrow.
We also began learning about five paragraph essays in 5A. We watched this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRTh3GKPHs0

For the test on Thursday your child needs to know:
Seven continents:

In Social Studies, your child has a check in on Monday about the three levels of government. The study sheet is attached to this email and was also shared with you earlier.
Remember - you only have to know TWO responsibilities for each level of government.
Please check your Maplewood marks. They have been updated. If there are mistakes, please email me to let me know.
In 5B we talked about empathy today and what it means. Please review this video with your child!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_1Rt1R4xbM
It is great for all ages!!!
In 5B we also introduced our "sharing circle." This is something I hope to do every Friday to create a greater sense of community in our classroom. We are really getting to know each other and it is fantastic!
Please ask your child about the wonderful assembly we had together. Thank you to Mrs. Satinder Kaur for taking the time to prepare these amazing assemblies. We really appreciate all her hard work and dedication.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Good day dearest parents and students,
I hope you are staying warm!! Please make sure you dress warmly for tomorrow because you might have outdoor recess. Alberta's weather changes constantly so we need to be prepared!
Thank you to those parents who are choosing not to send their children to school because of everything that is happening around COVID 19. Your child will NOT fall behind.
Today we did a grammar assessment (it's, its, your, you're, are, our and they're, their, there.) The marks for the assessment were recorded. If you were absent you can complete the assessment upon your return to school.
For homework tonight:
Please finish the New Year's Resolutions handout. Remember you have to write THREE burger style paragraphs describing three resolutions you have for 2022.
Spelling sentences (25) are to be shared with me. I have already received completed sentences!! Congratulations to those students who already completed the work!!! You are awesome!!
Also by Friday, please share TWO current events stories with me (other than COVID 19 news). Thank you and congratulations to those students who have already shared them with me!
Please bring THREE objects that represent you to present to the class by Friday. If you have a favourite stuffie, a game, a special piece of clothing, something that represents a hobby you have, an interest you have, a special talent you have...please bring THREE objects that represent you. You will be sharing these in front of the class. This is all part of our growth mindset learning.
In Social Studies, students were assigned the clothes hanger project today for the Cordillera Region. The guidelines are attached below and they were explained in detail in class. The project is due Friday, February 11. Remember that late projects will NOT be accepted. The rubric for the project is also attached below.
Have yourself a wonderful rest of your day and stay warm!!!!
