Further to our offer of a place for your child at KGV for August 2023, we are pleased to provide you with information about the One-to-One Laptop Learning Programme. At KGV all students must have a laptop dedicated to the school work which they bring to school every day. We strongly recommend purchasing the laptop through our programme as there are many benefits to doing so listed below. The purchase will be through an approved laptop from our winning tender (In 2023 this was HP). This laptop will generally be used from Year 7 to at least the end of Year 9.

Vision

At KGV, Learning Technologies will enable, enrich, enhance and transform learning opportunities for students. Students will develop literacy in accessing, evaluating, creating and communicating information. Furthermore, they will be able to employ digital tools effectively and ethically.

We believe that one-to-one learning is the key to achieving this vision, as it allows teachers to engage students more fully in the learning process. We will be empowering students to learn using 21st-century methods. Our students will be encouraged to collaborate and compete in a global society, which requires that they be digitally literate and technologically astute.

This year we are pleased to confirm the model as the HP Probook G10 (below).

This year the school-selected model for students starting KGV in the academic year starting August 2023 is the Hewlett Packard ProBook G10.

It is strongly recommended to purchase this device for all incoming Year 7 students and new students joining in Years 8 and 9 through HP as there are many additional benefits that minimise disruption to learning for those on the programme. This offer is also open to students in Year 10 and above who are reaching the end of their first laptop life span.

Since the introduction of the laptop programme a number of years ago, many questions have been asked by parents.

ESF has a rigorous tender procedure to ensure that the model chosen is the best value for students and parents. The winning tender this year is the HP Probook 440 (above)

Payment Options

To assist parents HP is developing a web portal where you will be able to pay using various credit cards. Instalment plans are also possible. The portal is accessible here: https://moss.com.hk/kgv/ it will actived in April.

Warranty and Service

The package will include KGV Helpdesk onsite services during term time and a next-day pick-up and return service by HP if necessary. The KGV Helpdesk will also have a loan system so that students who need to hand in their laptops for service will be able to borrow a laptop for use in class. Outside of term time, warranty and service are available directly through HP.

Accidental Damage and Insurance Options

Regretfully, accidents happen. No matter how carefully you plan, there is always the chance that a problem will occur. KGV includes HP’s Accidental Damage Policy as standard in the cost of the laptop. Further details about the policy are available via the One-to-One website, but some of the key features are:

3 years’ coverage
‘New for old’ replacement of any part of the laptop’s hardware, limited to one per year.

For additional peace of mind, for theft and loss, parents might also consider insuring the laptop through their own Home Contents insurance policy. You are, of course, free to choose the insurance option that best suits your circumstance, or sources your own additional insurance.

OPting OUT of the Programme

If you wish to opt out of the scheme please fill out this Opt-Out form.

By opting out you will not be buying a laptop through the scheme but it is still an expectation that a dedicated device which meets the minimum specification will be accessible by the student every day in school and for home learning. This device will belong to the student and not be shared with any other person so they have access to it whenever they need the device for school work.

The best device for these students is a small powerful portable laptop, with the ability to connect USB devices. Minimum specifications include:

Processor - we recommend Intel i5 or above (such as i7), avoid Intel Celeron processors.
Memory - At least 8GB of RAM.
Storage - Greater than 256GB sized solid state drive, 512GB or above is preferred.
Long battery life - +5 hours whilst on Wi-Fi as a minimum
Operating System - we will only accept Windows 10 home and professional versions and Apple Mac laptops.
Screen Size - 13" or higher screen size
Wireless Network card - 802.11 b/g/n/a/ac
Keyboard - The device must have a physical keyboard in order to be able to type extended pieces of work efficiently.

Antivirus software installed and automatic updates on.

The device must be in good working order and it will need to be maintained and not lag as we don't want students to be disadvantaged by slow response times. The best device for these students is a small powerful portable laptop, with the ability to connect USB storage devices. Hybrid devices with touch screens, such as the Microsoft Surface, have proven popular due to their lightweight design and long battery lives, but they can be quite expensive.

Apple MacBooks are also very popular and supported, but they do have a limitation relating to not supporting Microsoft Access, a database application used in Computing lessons. As we have been a Windows school for a long time there is some DT equipment which will need extra software to work on Apple machines. Students should be familiar with the machine.
