SDG 13
Climate Action
Climate Action
Thank you for participating in the KGUMUN and reading this Background Guide section. This section describes Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. This topic aims to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. This section is an overview of the theme and tips for researching. I am looking forward to meeting you. I wish you all the best.
Good luck!
Various natural disasters such as heat waves, droughts and large typhoons are occurring all over the world. The impact is seriously damaging our lives in all fields such as agriculture, fisheries, drinking water, energy and so on. These disasters are caused by various climate changes as a result of global warming. Under the circumstances, the 2020 global average temperature is at 1.2℃ above the pre-industrial baseline, oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have decreased, and the sea level has risen. From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm as oceans expanded. The Arctic Sea ice extent has shrunk in every successive decade since 1979.
A. World Meteorological Organization(WMO)
As weather, climate and the water cycle know no national boundaries, international cooperation on a global scale is essential to implement an Earth system approach for the development of meteorology, climatology, operational hydrology and related environmental services as well as to reap the benefits from their application. The WMO is dedicated to international cooperation and coordination on the state and behavior of the Earth’s atmosphere and its interaction with the land and oceans. The WMO is also a forum of international cooperation on the extreme weather events the Earth produces, and the resulting reduction in the predictability of water availability and water quality. Also, the WMO monitors the Earth’s system 24 hours a day and provides important weather, global warming and climate information around the world. The WMO helps many people with early and reliable warnings about bad weather, air quality changes and climate change. Its warnings help save lives and property, protect resources and the environment, and support social and economic growth.
B. United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
The UNFPA is working with governments and other partners to support adaptation responses to climate change, and putting women and girls at the center of these efforts. As the world responds and adapts to the evolution of the crisis, these actions must support all human rights.
The UNFPA is helping governments design climate change solutions to help people and communities adapt. Also, the UNFPA believes that young people should be empowered and supported to develop innovative solutions that will improve the adaptive capacity of their communities. The UNFPA is an organization that is working to resolve climate change.
The impacts of climate change affect us all. There are various problems such as rising air temperature, rising sea water temperature, and the sea ice phenomenon in the Arctic Ocean. Also, it has a great impact on people such as agriculture and economic disparity. In order to solve climate change, not only countries but also companies and individuals need to work on it. We have to find a solution from different perspectives. I believe that our actions will be rewarded.
