The Guardian - Self-isolating with kids? There's plenty more to do than watch TV
Welcome to our new Virtual School “launch site”. As you know, we are living in a time and place where almost everyone is interconnected, information transfer and communications are instantaneous, and every home office, kitchen table, and basement rec room can become a combination of classroom and movie studio.
As of April 1st, our school campus is no longer on Seymour River Place, it’s everywhere. It’s in your home and in your tutors’ and teachers’ homes and in my home as well! This is our new virtual school. For the next while, this is where we are going to be getting together for learning, and sharing, and just hanging out. To be honest, it's not as good as being together in the same classroom, or school, or playground, but it is way better than the alternatives
So on April 1st, KGMS Virtual goes live (well, virtually live anyway!). There will be an ever changing mix of direct instruction, real-time one on one tutoring, virtual hangouts, small, live, teacher-led learning groups, face to face personal counselling, SLP support, and self-regulation coaching. In addition, students and families will have access to a bank of resources and activities that can enrich learning even when not directly interconnected.
Will it work? Will it do all of the things that currently happen in our bricks and mortar school building? Who really knows?! All I can tell you is that it will be a product of careful and meticulous planning; of enthusiastic professionals teaching and learning themselves as things evolve; of supportive families and, most importantly, of our students, who will be a bit nervous about this at first, but who will rise to the occasion and do the best that they can in this new world of school!
I am really looking forward to sharing in all of the online adventures in learning that are going to take place over the next few weeks, to seeing you online, and looking especially forward to welcoming you back to KGMS itself when things get back to normal. In the meantime, enjoy and get actively involved in this new virtual world of school.
Best wishes,
Jim Christopher
Head of School
