Meet Mr. Baker

I have the pleasure of instructing your child this year in physical education. I have always found sports and physical fitness as a great outlet. Being a former Marine, student athlete, and having two student athletes of my own, I have found teaching as a way to pass on my love of fitness. My goal is to present a curriculum that is enriching and motivating to all students at all fitness levels and abilities. Students can learn to make good lifetime health and fitness choices while having fun in class.

I believe that physical education is a part of the total school curriculum which uniquely focuses on the physical development of the child, while also addressing the emotional, intellectual and social needs of the child. I adopt the content standards for physical education prepared by the Virginia SOL's into my lesson plans as well as incorporate the classroom curriculum when possible. Instructions will also be centered around three areas:

  • Cognitive: Development in sport and game, fitness education and how it relates to life long wellness
  • Affective: Development in cooperative games, sportsmanship and team work
  • Psychomotor: Development through activities and skill development

All of the this will carry over to helping the student excel in the classroom and their studies. I invite you to watch a TED talk (link below) on how physical education can help students improve in school.

2018-2019 will mark the beginning of the Fitnessgram Testing for 3rd-6th grade students. It will be a series of four different tests: Pacer running, flexibility, push-ups, and curl-ups. These tests will be administered in September and again at the end of the year to check for progress.

Most importantly, I like to have fun in class. The students are going to have a great year, and I look forward to seeing them grow with King George Elementary! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
